One of my favourite assignments in second semester to shoot was High Key Portraits. I had been curious as to how this style of photography was achieved and it turned out to be much easier than I had previously expected.

Here are three images of Mattie from my shoot for this assignment.

The 2011-2012 Algonquin College First Year student as we drop off our portfolios.

10. Self-Directed Portrait
For my self-directed portrait I almost immediately had an idea for it. Aaron is the roommate of my friend Ryan who appears in my Environmental Portrait. Aaron just opened up a skateshop here in Ottawa called Antique Skateshop. My idea was to have him in his new store and he’d kindly agreed. It’s a great store. Definitely check it out if you ever in the bank st area at 9 Florence Street.

My 1st year comes to a close.

With just one test left this year I am about to be finished my first year of Algonquin College’s Photography Program. I am extremely happy with the decision I made to take this program after completed my undergraduate degree. I had always enjoyed photography and really wanted to take the next step in learning more and improving my skills and that is exactly what happened. Within the first month of the program I had felt like I had already learned so much, and so after 8 months I feel like I knew nothing before.

A requirement to the first year of the program is to complete a portfolio with 10 images in different categories. Here are the following categories that appear in my portfolio:

1. Architectural Interior

2. Glass

3. Metal

4. Photo Illustration

5. Self-Directed Commercial Image

6. Macro

7. Low Key Portrait

8. High Key Portrait

9. Environmental Portrait

10. Self-Directed Portrait

I’m very thankful for the support of my friends and family along with my fellow students and especially my professors who have been extremely helpful in supporting my growth as a photographer.

I hope you enjoy my portfolio images.

Thanks,

John

3:48am and I’m currently on my way home from school. Another late night working on portfolio. Thursday didn’t leave til 1:30am, fri 5am, sat 3am. It’s worth it when I’m done early this week and the others that have been waiting til last minute will be stressing trying to finish.
